A FEW GUIDELINES ON MATCHES
1. A MATCH is played between 2 individuals, 2 pairs OR a team. It can be played in different formats, strokeplay, matchplay, 4 ball betterball, foursomes etc. 2. When arranging a match- try to be flexible with your availability. 3. Be aware of the format of the match - strokeplay ( over 18 holes) or matchplay ( hole by hole) AND the handicap allowance to be calculated. (Particularly with 4 ball betterball). 4. Be aware of the conditions of the competition as laid down by the committee in the result of a tie. Eg. Matchplay is usually settled by returning to the 1st. and playing until a result, strokeplay matches are usually settled on countback.
5. The player with the lowest handicap has the honour on the first tee. In the case of a visiting team – the visitor has the honour. 6. Identify your ball to your opponent on the first tee and make a special mark on it. 7. It is YOUR responsibility to know when you receive shots, if played off handicap.
8. Be aware of the Rules of Golf regarding Matchplay- most infringements result in loss of hole. Carry a rule book in your golf bag at all times. NB-You must NOT play on the course before a Strokeplay match. 9. DO NOT PLAY OUT OF TURN- (especially on the green) - if you do - your opponent is entitled to ask you to play the shot again. 10. Be careful not to assume your opponent will concede a putt to you. 11. When conceding a putt, pick up your opponents’ ball and hand it back to them, do not throw it back. 12. Do not concede a hole until it is obvious your opponent will win it ( you might put 2 balls in the water but they might put 3 in !!). HOWEVER there is nothing worse than not conceding a hole when you are playing your 8th. shot to the green and your opponent is on in 2!! 13. It is etiquette to tell your opponent the score when it is all square OR she is up. YOU SHOULD NOT SAY – " I’m 2 up" . However, this might have to be done if your opponent is not experienced in matchplay. ADVICE – always keep a card with the hole by hole score so that there can be no disputes.,(tell your opponent on the 1st. tee that this is your intention). 14. If you are playing for the Ladies team – PLEASE read the TEAM guidelines, which will inform you of other relevant information. 15. There are many other pointers to matches which you will only gain from experience. The most important thing is to enjoy it. It is a great format and it is fun to play.
16. Finally, be a good loser; remember it is only a game.
